| "It was horrible, I tell you!" he cried "Some of my mates died there."
He shudders for a moment before continuing his tale. "There were six of us at first. We went into the forest thinking that we could destroy the evil beasts said to live within. We wanted to test our battle skills! As we left the highway, we caught our first glimpse of the forest. It was unnaturally dark, like a black stain upon the land. Do not think for a moment that this is a regular forest. Its trees are dark and twisted and they seem to watch you." He pauses for a moment, his eyes dark with memories of what he has seen. "We were heartened by how easily we defeated a group of roadside bandits that attacked us as we started for the forest. Foolish, foolish pride. There was no way to keep our bearings in the forest. We became horribly lost. The trees seemed to crowd in on us. Strange ape-like creatures began to fall onto us from above. They made short work of Salhen. Tairn walked onto a patch of oddly colored grass and was dead instantly. We decided to make for the road as quickly as possible. I have to say that I ran blindly, without stopping, even when strange men in masks attacked and took down my comrades. Strange vegetation also gave chase. It was all a blur, and I can't truly tell you how I escaped." He puts his face into his hands and begins to sob. |
